Hi there

Posted by Rachel Beardmore at Sep 28, 2008 07:55 PM
Hi Ruth and everyone else,
I just accessed the site for the second time and I couldn't find the comment I posted, oophs, that is because I posted it in the SEN08 file!! Anyway, I am currently working in Germany at an international school. I am a class teacher who would like to specialise in SEN and I am interested in finding more stratgies to help and support children within my classroom and identifying which strategies work best, not just in core subjects (where we tend to differentiate the most), but also in foundation subjects to include the children and encourage them to learn.
I hope everyone had a nice weekend!

Hi rachel

Hi Sounds like we are juts the ticket for you rachel. We will be asking you to xplore the litrature on best practice, and then to share what we find out. Then we will help you audit what currently happens in your work and develop a stratgey and plan for improvement, which you will hen evaluate.

have a good time in germany

Looking for examples of good practice

Posted by rgreen2 at Sep 29, 2008 12:52 PM
Dear Rachel, As Ian says I think the course should be great for you. You could start to build up some examples of lessons where inclusion has worked really well. What were the elements that enabled all the children to participate and learn. We'll be helping you with an on -line discussion about how this can be used in your portfolio.

I'm Morag, I currently work as a performing arts consultant in Berkshire and Hampshire. I work in special schools and adult settings. I am interested in autism and challenging behaviour. I am excited and nervous about the new course. Excited about all the new learning and nervous as I am new to web based work. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. Looking forward to discussions with you all online.

Best Wishes. M

Dear Morag, Lovely to hear from you. Your work sounds really exciting. No need to be nervous about the course as its a new way of working for most people and it provides you such a lot of flexibility to tailor the modules to meet your own interests and learning. I look forward to hearing more about your role. Do you use the book 'Creative Expressive Activities and Asperger's Syndrome' Judith Martinovich. Its got some really great ideas in there. All best, Ruth

Hi Morag,
What an interesting combination. I have a performing arts degree and am currently working with a charity organization in Watford called DRUM teaching Drama to Adult student with disabilities. I found that performing arts busts confidence. It certainly did my Step daughter with Down-sydrome. Looking forward to sharing ideas with you and everyone.

Hi there,

My name is Tom. I live in Isleworth and work at Harlequins Rugby Club. I started as a primary school teacher in Befont but now work at the club in an after school hours learning centre called 'Try Learning'. I am the centre teacher there. i am responsible for the delivery and design of the 6 week course for targeted schools in the borough of richmond (London) It comes under the umbrella of 'Playing for Success'. A government scheme set up 10 years ago to help originally inner city boys get back into learning. After its success it is now set up across nearly all major sports clubs in football and rugby clubs for all children lacking confidence at school. We use sport to help children back into learning. They don't play sport, it is 100% academic, concentrating on ICT, Literacy and Maths but also heavily on self esteem and confidence. It basically runs as a little school.

This has turned out far longer than i planned. I am very excited to be starting the MA Inclusive - SEN course. I look forward to being in contact and cracking on!! ( our website - www.trylearning.co.uk )

Thanks, Tom

Hi everyone
My name is Wendy and I live in Chingford (East London). I work as a special needs teacher in a local all girls secondary school and am pursuing this study to try and develop my career further in this area. I originally started life as a PE teacher so I was interested to read about Tom's work. I also share his thoughts on this whole distance learning thing, but it is a great way to combine study with a busy life. I too just hope I can get the hang of the online discussions - not too bad so far, although it took me a whole week to get to this point! I hope everyone enjoys great success on this course and the benfits that completion of it will bring. I am sure that the children we work with will definitely benefit.
Have a nice weekend

Hello Lisa,

We already have two things in common:
1. I too am a late starter.
2. 'Overwhelmed' to say the least.

I am currently working as a LS teacher in Nairobi and wanted to extend my SpLD qualification. Must say that the initial read of the course material terrified me, a little better on the 2nd and hopefully after the 3rd read I can begin.

Good luck to us all!

Hi,

I'm Ruth Crosby and I am currently teaching SEBD students aged throughout the Primary range. I am responsible for Teaching and Learning in this area and also run a department known as 'Forest School.' My teaching situation is rather innovative, we are a fererated body of three schools which now exist on a single site in a fantastic building. I am hoping to develop 'inclusive' practice acroos the three schools, Primary, secondary and Special.
I have experienced difficulties with my PC since uploading Kaspersky anti-virus and am unable to open some documents - but am still 'exploring' the information and attempting to register everywhere I should be.
Speak soon.

I was first trained as a Key Stage 1 teacher. When I returned to work after having my children, I started working in the Further Education Sector and that's where I am now. I work within an Additional Learning Support Department in a Further Education College in Barnet (Greater London) supporting students aged 16+ who are studying a wide range of courses. Last year I completed a Diploma in Assessing and Teaching Learners with Spld (Dyslexia). I am doing this course to broaden and deepen my knowledge of Inclusive Education. Jackie Andrews

Jackie,

I have done diploma course in Teaching Learners with SpLD did you do yours with Dyslexia Action? I did mine with Hornsby gefore the institute was merged with Dyslexia Action. I am myself dyslexic as well as my son.
I am doing this course because it simply excite me to learn more (may be about me and my son)but most importantly to be able to assist persons in this part of the world with SpLD who have no help available. It was difficult educating my son who now holds a BA in Graphic Arts. There were many crying times. Looking forward to sharing with all. Hya

I am selfemoployed teaching children with dyslexic tendencies reading. I did coursers in both teaching and assessing of persons with dyslexia. I am excited about this course but it seem so confusing.

After over a year of dithering I have finally enrolled on this course and I must admit to feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. I currently work as a deputy SENCO in a mixed secondary school in the London borough of Redbridge. I started my teaching life as a science teacher so it has become clear to me that my skills are falling a little short of the needs of the students that I currently work with. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in but at the same time feel like there is so much information that I don't know where to begin with it all! I look forward to working with you all. Dawn

Welcome to all of you who have come on line so far. My name is Pauline and as a tutor on the SpLD pathway I am here to help you with any issues or difficulties relating to this part of the course. My email address is psumner21@live.co.uk so you can also contact me directly if you wish.
With regard to some of your points above, it will all seem very strange to start with as there is quite a lot of new information to take in - but hopefully as we go along, everything will fall into place. I am sure you will also find a lot of support from discussing the course content/your work between yourselves and would strongly recommend this. If you have any questions about the content of the handbook please use the discussion board to ask me, so that others can benefit from the discussion content.
Looking forward to working with you all

Stacey - I think it is an excellent idea to get together in groups to discuss these topics and help each other out. Due to the global nature of the course though perhaps it would be easier to form discussions groups via email or using the discussion boards. If students wish I could suggest groups of students on the SpLD pathway? What does everyone think?

I thought you were going to group us if we lived near eachother so that we can meet. Seeing that there are only 7 of us - we might as well have one discussion group that we can all be part of. I';m not sure what other people think.
Thanks though for going to the trouble.

Hello - belatedly!

Posted by Ann Harris-Lock at Oct 13, 2009 10:03 AM
I'm Ann. I am just recovering from our second bout of the dreaded flu, topped off by foodpoisoning yesterday. I have recently left Dyslexia Action where I was Senior teacher running the Nottingham Centre, previously in the same post at the Derby Centre. Before that I taught Basic & Key Skills and supported dyslexic students at West Notts College, Mansfield. I am now self-employed from home (Edwinstowe, which is in Sherwood Forest) and am mainly concerned with Diagnostic Assessment for Dyslexia and workplace consultations, working with the OU, NTU, EEF and the FRS, as well as children of school age. Having reached 60, I am now involving myself in the voluntary sector and intend to work with the Gypsy and Traveller Community - hopefully basing my research & dissertation here.
PS: I, too, am quite apprehensive with regard to 'distance learning'

Hi I'm Joy and I have recently been given the responsibility of overseeing the development of a new intervention classroom. I was originally overwhelmed by a new role and re-organisation along with getting a grip on the course materials. I have worked with challenging adolescents for 14 years in the Youth Service in Leicester city and now work in a community college with 14-18 yer old students who need support or intervention; the majority have ESBD.
