CONVERSATION ONE

Welcome everyone!

This is a very important conversation! We need to be sharing work and supporting each other and in order to do that, we need to know who we are! So...who are we? Why are we here?

cacti

Cacti are many and varied as we are! Some prick us if we get too close - others are smooth to the touch - all of them can nourish themselves through hard terrain!

Hi everyone

I am Ian Terrell and I will be working with Gina Revill to fascillitate this module.

I shall also be working with tutors and supervisors Peter Gordan, Gary Meek, Peter taylor and Ruth Green to make sure Dissertations and Action research projects are good.

Hi everyone

Hi
I'm Carol Jones and I'm at the dissertation stage of my MEd which I think is more suited to the straight MA in Education as the focus of my research topic is "A critical analysis of the concept of "moral leadership": a study of leaders of the global dimension in the curriculum in schools. So, if any of you have GD leaders in your schools, then I'd be really interested in talking to them or, giving them a questionnaire to ask them about what motivated them in becoming a leader of the global dimension. I have a hunch that GD leaders aren't motivated by ambition or career development, but more by their passionate moral beliefs and values. What is everyone else doing.
BTW my route to the dissertation module was: Learning through International Partnerships: LIPs (With Gina), AESI (With Ian and Gina!) and now the prickly problem of the dissertation module.

Hi Carol (again :-)

Hi Carol - We get to work together again - yippeee! Of course, I won't be your tutor as before, but I will be running this online space so will 'see' a lot of you!

Your dissertation sounds really interesting - and relevant to our times. I'll look forward to following it.

My name is Andrew Christiansen. I started my MA several years ago- I had to put it on hold as I moved jobs. So I'm jumping back in at the dissertation stage-feeling slightly 'rusty'. I work as a deputy head in a large childrens centre in Haringey. My MA is going to relate to pupil tracking-I've not refined the exact question as yet. I want to look at the system we currently have in place and critically review it. I'm intrested in the role parents play in tracking pupils as well as staff perceptions. I think also I want to examine the notion that we ought to 'measure what we value not value what we measure'and the tensions within this particularily around government thinking- the proposed new school 'report card' etc.

I am Janet Price and very new to this. I am trying to navigate my way around and see what I need to do.I am a SENCO in a very lare primary school and I am non-teaching. I am also responsible for child pretection and am an assistant head. I am interested in various things such as the effectiveness of multi agency working as in the use of the CAF. I am also part of a project at the moment in the school using 2 ICT programmes with 2 classes in the same cohort. My previous diploma work had little to do with ICT though so I am slightly indecisive as to where I wish to focus for the dissertation.

Posted by Gina Revill at Jan 25, 2009 10:55 PM
Hi Lisa

I think what has happened, based on some emails I'm trawling through now, is that Ian removed our opening contributions (a shame - they were so wonderful if we do say so ourselves :-). Actually, he had good reason - it seems a couple of students had popped in here and it's not their course and we had referred to them - he was trying to avoid confusion I believe.

Can you introduce your wonderful self again? I will have to as well - I might go get a cup of tea to gather some inspiration. It is 10.54am here and I made savoury muffins last night, and have red bush tea in my drawer. Very appropriate for a cactus-themed course, if one has read the 'Ladies No 1 Detective Agency' series!

Welcome aboard and I'll look out for your 'take two' version! :)

Where DID you go??!! Take two

Hi everyone ! My name is Lisa Taner and I taught( past tense-get to that later) at Bowes Primary in Enfield, part time, (because Im taking some time out to complete this study and do other work). My specialist subjects if you like are Ethnic Minority Achievement and the Global Dimension/ Internationalism. I also work for Local4Global, an organisation funded by the UK Dept for International Development (DFID-sounds like a welsh town!) and our ‘mission’ is for children in our region, London and South East, to have a Global Dimension in their education- sustainable development, conflict resolution and such like.
I’m doing the Dissertation and have studied under Gina last year, where our theme was pirates aaarrrr, and when I saw the new cactus inspired theme I thought…riiiite, an inspired choice Ian. And very global dimension too. I could get a scheme of work out of that!
Have not yet found a suitable cactus joke but had plenty of pirate ones.
I know Carol here and found her and Gina very rock-like and quite un cactus like all of last year. I have to say how nice it is that there are so many of us on here and long may it continue!!
I am thinking of researching teacher networks and their effects on practice ( I have set up 2 local networks for teachers for the global dimension in nth London) and had a wonderful sound bite from one of their HTs last week. I am also interested in starting to research aspects of leadership (my own and others) so donr know if I can combine the two and am a little wooly right now, but I’m sure I can get my focus right soon.
I am also a fan of redbush tea (or Rooibos, depending on where you are from!) and am really looking forward to a lively and active online community this year as its sad talking to yourself and of course it’s the first sign of insanity. Bye for now.

I'm trying to work out how to navigate around the site too - glad I'm not the only person who finds all this a little daunting to say the least. Questions such as student ID for the Learning Resources - do we receive a virtual ID badge with a number? No doubt it will all make sense in the fullness of time!! Jackie Andrews

Jackie Hi- I also had a few probs at first on the original site but this is the third host Ive been on and its fine, you will get the hang of it,I always find the 'crumbtrail' handy the bit on the top left that says 'You are here: Home → Research → Action Enquiry 2008(i) → CONVERSATION ONE → talkback → Hello Everyone' etc.
At least this new plone site is relatively uncluttered right now!
Good luck everyone this year.

Thanks Lisa for your kind words and advice

Think I've calmed down a bit now, but it is rather strange working on line, you realise how dependent you are on other senses!! Reading is the main one here, although I think some of us get to meet on the 14th February, it must be even harder for students in other parts of the country/world?

Good luck to everyone - the thing to remember is that everyone is in the same boat.

You are welcome

although unfortunately wont be able to make the 14th ( Valentines Day Ian..what were you thinking!!) as Im in Prague, no not being swept off my feet but doing some etwinning stuff with the British Council :-)
I have just looked at the course guide and was shocked to find that we have to get something in soon- by the 15th in fact!! Help!
Ok , need to focus, is it just me who cannot pinpoint their research?

Great to see you all here. If you are doing an Action Research module or a dissertation, you are in the right place! The membership list seems a little messy right now, as the final administration processes haven't been finalised, but we can get started anyway!

I am Gina, and Ian has contracted me to tutor some Action Research students, and to run this online space. If you see me on here at odd times, it's because I'm based in New Zealand - the beauty of online work means it doesn't matter where I physically am! I might never meet you face to face but in my experience, you can have a lot of fun online and get to know each other well - AND complete top-notch work, all online!

My background is in Education - secondary teaching, postgraduate teacher professional development programmes and online learning. Ian guided me through my own MA and taught me everything I know - he instilled in me a love of research and I hope we can do the same here for you.

I have never been to St. Vincent but have been to two of your Caribbean sister islands- Kingston Jamaica on a teachers professional development course and New providence Bahamas. On thh whole I preffered Jamaica, and it is a wish of mine to return.
Good luck with your study. Special educational needs looked very different here to the schools we visited in jamaica- maybe we can catch up on that one day in future conversations. Bye for now.

Hi I'm Bev Benson and I'm supposed to do a dissertation, but beyond that I don't know what I'm supposed to do. Do I just make something up? I'm working on introducing the MLE at the moment, so I'll probably do something based around that. Does that sound reasonable?

OOo err . . . ..

Posted by Gina Revill at Feb 01, 2009 10:53 PM
Hi Bev - glad to see you here - I just replied to your email but I see you have problem-solved yourself!!

You can just 'make something up' but best to do what you have to do for work anyway as much as possible. We want your research to be useful to you and your organisation.

Can you explain what you mean by MLE? Do you mean managed learning environment? If you have to introduce one, it would certainly make sense to do some kind of research around that process. What would be most useful to you? What do you really want to know? Burning questions? :)

Athens and Disseration Ideas

Posted by Elaine Parkin at Feb 03, 2009 05:25 PM
Hi Ian and Gina
Thank you for the replies and before we go any further I must apologise for my typing. For some unknown reason my fingers don't seem to want to co-ordinate with my brain and I keep making loads of errors!!
Sorted out Athens. I got in touch with the ICT help desk and left a query. They replied very quickly and gave me my logon codes.
Reading through the other postings it seems a good idea to start giving you some insight into the type of areas I am thinking about for my dissertation. The ideas are very b-r-o-a-d and I appreciate do need refining but I seem to be working on this and would appreciate any advice
1) We have a number of pupils in my school that function on the lower percentiles. We loosely describe them as moderate learning difficulties. I would like to explore barriers to learning in terms of the curriculum as the teaching assistants often report that little differentiation takes place. I want to explore the notion of differentiation and assessment e.g KS3 Level 1 & 2 and using P grades.
2) These students also come with a variety of additional needs, for example, speech language and communication, difficulties with social skills. I would like to explore how quite specifically one of the aforementioned could be incorporated and delivered into an area of the curriculum. This would also include and investigation into its affect or otherwise on the students and others in the class?
3) The perceived effects of educating students with MLD on other mainstream pupils?
4) An element from the Inclusion Development Programme (not sure what – need to think more)..maybe analysing the impact of a particular area or implementing a particular area and analysing the impact.
5) As number ‘1’ but for Dyslexic students. This may be difficult with the ones that I am aware of as many of them are low functioning with co-morbidities. I would interested in including an element to identify the high functioning Dyslexics (the ones that seem to cope and slip the net)
I suspect that I have been thinking tooo hard..............................or should I write one point for every spike on that cactus (personally I prefer cats and elephants!!)
Regards
Elaine Parkin

Hello Elain

Posted by Hyacinth Rose-Manners at Feb 05, 2009 12:35 AM
I am Hyacinth,
I too have done the Diploma for teaching Dyslexic persons. I also did certificate in Hearing Impaired. but my interest remains with dyslexia. I am self employed as a dyslexia specialist. I do one -to -one tutoring privately. I have made contact with a primary school to do my Action Research. I feel lost not getting on to the library and Athens but I will keep trying.

Ian,

My thoughts are on the way we learn Can we all learn if we all learn differently. The question is can we all learn academics? Too often I hear teachers say that "he/she can't learn what I teach." Is cognitive learning the only learning we need for a productive life. Is learning dependent on what we teach or how we teach.

well this is really my concern I hope to do active research on.

Hi everyone,

I am that fish (SMILE) I am Tracey Amoa-Sakyi, a teacher of Food Technology in Enfield, London. I should be doing my dissertation but I have not decided on my focus. I have a few ideas, re raising achievement but I am not sure if they can work.

Idea 1: Raising achievement of boys through student responsibility
Idea 2: Raising achievement through personalised Learning in Food Technology
Idea 3: Raising achievement through parental involvement.

Whhat do you think?

Tracey

Fish out of water.

Posted by Gina Revill at Feb 03, 2009 12:08 AM
Now how can we fit in the fish with our cactus theme? :)

Your ideas are all valid and refreshingly focused. All could work.

Completing a dissertation is a big job - there will be times when you are very tired late at night finishing off parts of your research while your friends are drinking pints down the pub :) - you need to choose something that you are truly interested in so the interest and joy you feel in undertaking the research carries you through these times!

You also need to think about what will be useful to your organisation. Does your work advocate have any ideas? How will what you do benefit your colleagues?

Hi everyone

Posted by Rebecca Poole at Feb 02, 2009 06:34 PM
Hi - have no idea if I am in the right part of the web-site. We are a group of 17 teachers in one school - Hendon School (a language college, but not so sure we have tackled the issue of moral leadership despite our global remit). Two of us are embarking on this module. My area of interest is (very broadly) the development of the managed learning environment to raise achievement, partly as a tool to really hone some assessment for learning strategies, as well as to achieve emotional "buy-in" from pupils and develop an identity as a learning community. Does that make sense? And am I in the right place?

Yes you are in the right place!

Posted by Gina Revill at Feb 03, 2009 12:16 AM
Hi Rebecca! Yes - welcome - you are in the right place. That is great that you will have someone to work with. This helps enormously. Your enquiry does make sense. How exciting. So you are developing an online aspect to your teaching? What do you teach? What age group? Who will be using the MLE?

Beverly - you are also looking at developing an MLE - you are doing a dissertation, and Rebecca is doing an shorter Action Research module, but you will be both following the same process and will be able to assist each other. This is good news!

Confusion and terror comes with the territory - don't worry!!! :) It all settles down in the end!

Perhaps it would be a good start to think about an area in your work that interests or concerns you. As I've said before in this conversation, it has to be something that really grabs you to sustain your motivation. What are some things in your day to day job that you would like to investigate?

Hi everyone, my name is Isobel, head of a two form entry nursery & infant school in Essex. I am part of the FIPC contingent and looking forward to working with a- global!- network of colleagues. It will cerainly add a fresh dimension. I was heartened to read the comments of others who feel a bit daunted or confused. From my perspective due to juggling and managing everything, but I stick to the philosophy that the more you do the more you can do! I have yet to decide upon a focus for my second year action research but it needs to be firmly rooted in school improvement otherwise the project won't get a look in. I was thinking along the lines of parent partnership or attendance- two significant areas we are trying to develop in our school, or train to gain/ NVQ qualifications for support staff & the difference this makes to pupil achievement. Any focus quesitions or ideas to help me develop an area into a focus action enquiry project would be welcome.

Hi Isobel!

Posted by Gina Revill at Feb 10, 2009 07:52 AM
Your ideas sound very feasible. I like your 'can-do' attitude - a must for masters study! Being a bit daunted or confused means that you are doing something that is stretching you, which of course is what we all ought to be doing for all of our lives. We are here to help so sit with the newness of it all and enjoy the journey!

Hello, my name is Amanda. I have replied to a couple of peoples introductions but thought I had better write a brief message to start with.
I attended Ian's Saturday meeting regarding research tecniques. Very interesting. Perhaps at the next meeting students might get to talk to the people that they have made contact with on line. Have a good half term holiday everyone.

Hi all I am the clueless one who just realized I too must participate in the conversations. I think? I am now in the Uk for a while for my Husbands work. In the meantime, I am working the MA programme. I found a special needs school to do my MA research in. I am so pleased to be there since I didn't know many people. I am looking forward to sharing with everyone. Good luck. Jessica

Hi!
I'm not sure whether I am part of this conversation, or which year this is attached to. Trying to learn to navigate this Web site and finding it confusing.... Am re-doing action enquiry outline as the first attemt was a bit confused. Will post it up when I have re done-it... I am one of the research students attached to Inclusive Theatre.
